Hurricane/Tropical Storm

Should I evacuate?
Follow the recommendations of local safety agencies. If an evacuation order is issued, leave as quickly as possible. (Be sure friends & family are aware of your evacuation route, anticipated arrival time & mobile phone number.)

How can I protect my vehicle(s)?
If leaving a car behind, park it indoors. If inside storage isn't possible, move it to higher ground, away from trees, telephone poles and potential sources of flying debris.

If storing an RV outdoors, park next to a large building for added wind protection. Seal doors, vents & air conditioning unit. Disconnect propane canisters & remove all portable electronics/accessories.

If storing a motorcycle, find a secure, dry indoor location. If stored outdoors, cover bike with durable cover & seal with strong waterproof tape. Secure in upright position using high-strength lines.

How can I protect my boat?
If on trailer, tow boat out of the area. If must be left behind, move it to higher ground. 

If stored outside, add weight to boat & trailer (protect trailer from added weight by positioning wood blocks between springs and frame). Use high-strength line to secure boat & trailer to distant trees or building. Consider using a "deadman" anchor to hold boat to ground.

If boat left in water, set lines and/or anchors for protection from all directions. Use heavy-duty lines & chafe guards. Leave enough slack in lines to accommodate storm surge.

Remove all electronics, accessories & gear for secure storage.

Unstep masts on sailboats. Lash mast & rigging to deck using high-strength braided line.

Is it safe to drive through standing water?
No.  Never drive through standing water. Find an alternate route.

Is it safe to drive my RV in high winds?
No.  If using RV for evacuation, leave the area before sustained high winds occur.

Where should I seek shelter?
Do not rely on your vehicle for shelter. Immediately pull off road, exit vehicle & try to gain access to a building. Proceed to the basement or bottom floor & find a secure location beneath a stairwell or in an interior room. Stay away from windows.

If you are caught outside, lie facedown on the ground in a low area far away from vehicles. Protect the back of your head & neck with your hands.

How can I secure my car/motorcycle/RV?
Your personal safety is most important; pull the vehicle to the side of the road & find shelter.


Hail Storm/Thunderstorm


What should I do if I'm driving & it starts to hail?
Immediately slow down & find a safe place to stop. If possible, park beneath an overpass. Turn on emergency flashers and headlights. Remain inside the vehicle with your back to the windshield. Cover your face to protect from broken glass.

What if my windshield is broken; can I still drive my car?
It's not safe to drive with a shattered or missing windshield.
